What we like about them
Hayden and Baker, situated on Craddocks Parade in Ashtead, is a prime example of why it pays to shop local. Living in Ashtead, we are blessed with plenty of independent businesses, of which Hayden & Baker is one of the best.
Having purchased the business from William Dyer in March 2022, Duncan Hayden-Baker has managed to find the tricky balance of making the shop his own (for instance, he uses a Himalayan Salt wall to help with ageing of beef), while maintaining the high standards of the shop before him.
That's not surprising given that Duncan has almost 40 years experience as a butcher. He even worked for William Dyer, as well as in numerous other butchers around Surrey and London. That knowledge shows from the moment you step in his shop - but also when you talk to him. When you do, you're immediately aware you are talking to a man who really knows his stuff.
We trialled it last week, making the most of sunny weather which lends itself so well to having a BBQ. Inside the shop were countless types of meat and cuts available - despite it coming to the end of the day and everyone else living in Ashtead also wanting a BBQ that night too.
We were torn between the enormous array of sausages on offer, marinated kebabs, or simply just a really good cut of steak. We eventually plumped for two enormous Iberico Pork Chops. The helpful attendant told us they had been marinated in honey and mustard and, most importantly, that Iberico Pork was the best you could buy. We were sold. We were also helpfully told how best to cook it on the BBQ so not to burn it to a crisp.
Whilst we were in there we also could have purchased many other types of food goodies too. There's a small selection of veg on offer, in addition to eggs, lots of dairy or alternative dairy products in the fridge, and shelf upon shelf of condiments and sauces. We also picked up some fresh pasta while we were in there for an easy supper the next night too.
Finally, Hayden & Baker Butchers also offers a Butchery masterclass. Customers can purchase a gift voucher too for this, so it's a great idea for that big meat eater in your life.
WOULD WE USE THEM AGAIN?
When the weather's great, it's fantastic for BBQ meat. When the weather is cold and wet, we'll be heading there when we want to put a roast dinner on the table.
